The ruling which outlawed gay marriages was first passed in 2008 then overturned in 2010. There was a chance the ban could have been reinforced but this new ruling, by a court in San Francisco, stated that a ban on same-sex marriages would be "unconstitutional".
One of the most vocal stars against the ban has been chat show host Ellen DeGeneres, who took to Twitter after hearing the news. "Today we took another step towards equality. Prop 8 was found unconstitutional again. I couldn't be happier," she wrote.
Jesse Tyler Ferguson, who plays one half of gay couple Mitchell and Cameron on Modern Family, tweeted a picture of the on-screen couple with a note saying: "How could you not want to see us tie the knot?"

Glee star Cory Monteith said he'd always expected the amendment to be thrown out. "Prop 8 has been ruled unconstitutional! In other news, the Pacific Ocean was discovered to be wet."
Cowboys & Aliens actress Olivia Wilde also chimed in on Twitter, stating that the next aim was to push the ruling into other states until all Americans could legally marry. "Woo hoo!! Die Prop 8 Die!" she wrote. "Next step Supreme Court!"
Longterm couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have said in the past that they wouldn't get married until everyone had the same opportunity, so this ruling means we're one step closer to seeing them finally get hitched.
