Emma Thompson has opened up about the affair her ex-husband Kenneth Branagh had with Helena Bonham Carter, which caused their marriage to end 18 years ago.

Speaking to The Sunday Times, the 54-year-old actress has said the whole ordeal – that ended her six-year marriage to the Shakespearian actor – was “all blood under the bridge”.

“It’s pointless,” she added, admitting that she holds no grudge against Bonham Carter.

“I haven’t got the energy for it. You can’t hold on to anything like that. I just think... pfft.

“Helena and I made our peace years and years ago.”

Emma and Kenneth married back in 1989 after two years of dating and they were, at one time, thought of as the golden couple of British cinema. They even had their own nickname in the media, ;Ken and Em.

However, the marriage ended after Branagh and Bonham Carter started a relationship together. Reports claim they began their affair after meeting on the set of the 1994 movie version of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein (which he also directed) and starred Bonham Carter as his love interest.

Thompson and Branagh’s marriage ended in 1995; he then dated Bonham Carter until 1999.

In the interview, the double Oscar-winning actress has also claimed she thinks that Bonham Carter is a “wonderful woman”, adding that she thinks they are similar in personality and style.

“Being slightly mad and a bit fashion-challenged,” she said of their likeness. “Perhaps that’s why Ken loved us both. She’s a wonderful woman, Helena.”

The two actresses have since starred together in the Harry Potter movies – Thompson as wacky teacher Professor Sybill Trelawney and Bonham Carter as dark witch Bellatrix Lestrange. They had previously worked together on the 1992 movie Howard’s End.

She is now married to actor and producer Greg Wise and they have two children together – 13-year-old Gaia and adopted son Tindyebwa Agaba, 26, a former child soldier from Rwanda.

After their romance ended, Branagh went on to marry Lindsay Brunnock and Bonham Carter married director Tim Burton, with whom she has two children.
