Michelle Heaton has shared the news with fans that she has a high chance of contracting cancer, and that she may need to have a double mastectomy.

She may also need to have her ovaries removed in order to avoid the disease.

Speaking to OK! magazine, the mum-of-one explained all about the discovery, which is linked to the BRCA2 gene.

"I have an 80% chance of getting ovarian cancer or breast cancer - and that's on top of everybody else's one-in-three chance.

"I've got to have an operation and we've got some decisions to make - whether I should have a double mastectomy and if I should have my ovaries removed to reduce the risks."

She added: "We're going to have some counselling sessions before we make our minds up. I've got my first mammogram soon."

'We' is her and Hugh Hanley, her husband of two years. They have a daughter together - Faith - who was born in January this year.

Michelle, who wowed everyone when she recently revealed her stunning post-pregnancy weight loss, was admitted to hospital on Sunday for heart problems, a long-standing problem for the 33-year-old.

Speaking more to her fans on Twitter about the breaking news, she wrote: "The shoot with @OK_Magazine this weeks (sic) reveals something I've been living with for a couple a months.

"Along with the events of the last...few days it's been a very tough couple of months. I am blessed to have such a wonderful family and amazing friends in this difficult time."

Michelle has also posted a message on her and Hugh's joint Facebook page (dedicated to health and fitness, a passion of theirs) thanking fans for their support.

"Hi guys. Thank u for all of your well wishes.. It's been a very tough couple of months and a very sore few days.. We are still working on the website.. Just bear with us during the difficult time. Love Michelle x"

However, she's determined not to let any of this get to her or impact her life, as she has revealed she still intends to take part in the Virgin triathlon in September! You go girl.

I have exactly the same faulty gene so faced the same choices as Michelle, as do several of my relatives who also tested positive for the faulty gene. I opted for hysterectomy and double mastectomy aged 34 but each woman facing this must make her own choices. Importantly, her nearest and dearest should respect her decision, whatever it may be, and support her. I managed to complete a 100k Saharan trek 18 months after my last op so I've no doubt that someone as tough and determined as Michelle will complete her challenging triathlon. My thoughts and best wishes go to her and her loved ones.
